Please say a big “hello!” to Gertie – my mannequin 😀
I’ve never owned a dressmakers dummy/mannequin, but I’ve thought about it many times. I always seemed to get caught up in the debate of whether an adjustable or non-adjustable one would be better. Then looking at the prices, well, they’re not exactly cheap are they? So at that point I’d ask myself if I really needed one, and that would be the end of that debate for another 6 months.
So why have I bought one now?
I’ve started stash-busting. You see I make bellydance tops (like the ones Gertie is wearing) to sell and whenever I see a fabric that would make a nice top, I buy some. Sometimes I buy enough to make one, sometimes if it’s a good price I’ll buy enough to make five. But then I don’t get around to making the tops out of these “limited edition” fabrics. Well I am now. And to sell them online I need good pictures of them.
Hmmm, I wondered, are there any cheap mannequins on eBay which would be suitable to display my tops on? Since I was just looking for one that looked nice and wasn’t too worried about the size, I found several sellers on eBay selling new mannequins for around £28 which is far cheaper than a “proper” dressmakers dummy, but if I got one roughly my size, I could maybe use it for my dressmaking as well!
Gertie arrived the day after I ordered her and she’s pretty perfect 😀 She looks good in aqua and pink . . .
. . . and she doesn’t mind if you see her bra . . .
. . . and she can even go braless without getting embarrassed . . .
. . . and she even doesn’t mind a passing ghost helping to hold up the sleeve of the top! 😉
She does have a bit of a mono-boob but it’s not really obvious when she’s wearing clothes.
So my etsy shop is about to offer for sale not only sewing patterns but bellydance tops! They’re kind of related, as in they both revolve around sewing, but maybe I should just start up another separate shop for the tops. Any thoughts?
On the Vintage Pattern Pledge front, I have my next pattern selected, and I have the fabric. I just need to alter the pattern to my size (it’s 2 sizes too big) and away I will go! Here’s the pattern and fabric I’ll be using:
